YouTube has the first video to hit 10 billion views and it’s not from Psy

Why is it important: A YouTube video has surpassed 10 billion views for the first time. It’s not Psy, the South Korean pop sensation that set all sorts of records on the platform nearly a decade ago, but it’s tied to the same region.

“Baby Shark” was published on YouTube by Pingfong in mid-2016 and became the first and only video to reach over 10 billion views. The catchy song and dance video for kids reached almost two billion views by the end of 2018, and just two years later it became the most viewed video on the platform with over seven billion views worldwide.

Pinkfong is a children’s entertainment brand from SmartStudy, a South Korean educational entertainment company that has been in business since 2010. In 2019, Pinkfong US CEO Bin Jeong said they did not expect the clip to become so popular. “Those who do it do it themselves,” Chung added.

You may be surprised to know that some of the top 10 YouTube videos are geared towards kids. Wiki quick check most viewed videos on youtube shows that six of the top 10 are kids videos.

For those who are curious, Psy’s hit video for Gangnam Style is currently outside of the top 10 at number 11 with 4.3 billion views. This is impressive in itself and shows how difficult it is to reach the top of the mountain and stay on or near the top.
