In a nutshell: This year, the Epic Games Store is playing the role of Santa Claus by giving away one of the most popular games in recent memory. The offer proved so popular that the site’s servers temporarily went down. Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding may currently be downloaded and saved forever doesn’t cost you a dime, but hurry up if you need a copy as the sale only lasts a few hours (until 8:00 AM PT / 11:00 AM ET Dec. 26).
Death Stranding was one of the most anticipated games when it was released on PS4 in 2019 (the PC version came in 2020). The open-world adventure and its stellar cast received critical acclaim – it was PC Gamer’s best game of 2020 – but the unique gameplay and mechanics mean it’s not for everyone, which is why Epic’s free giveaway is so compelling; there is no need to risk money on something you might not like.
Epic kicked off the deal by giving away the recent Death Stranding Director’s Cut. However, the offer appears to have been more popular than expected. As with the GTA V giveaway in 2020, the sheer volume of people trying to access the service has caused it to become overloaded. As soon as the Epic Games Store returned, the giveaway was changed to the Death Stranding base edition. It’s still a good deal and base game owners can switch to director’s cut for just $6 by taking advantage of the current Steam Christmas sale.
The Epic Game Store is giving away a different game each day as part of its holiday sale. There were several big names on the list, including Wolfenstein: The New Order, Sable, and Metro Last Light Redux. There are four more titles given away before it ends, with the next one arriving in a few hours when the Death Stranding offer expires.
If you want to see if Death Stranding lives up to the hype, the deal ends at 11:00 AM EST, so you’d better act fast. There are plenty of other holiday deals on the store and Steam as well; Check out some of these great deals on the Valve website.
