Xbox Series X/S makes more money than any other console in Q1 2022

TLDR: In the US, the Microsoft Xbox Series was the top-selling hardware platform in the first quarter of 2022 in dollars, with the Nintendo Switch leading the way in units sold. Sony’s PlayStation 5 is lagging behind due to persistent availability issues. Meanwhile, total spending on video games and gaming equipment was down 8% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

Consoles, like graphics cards, suffered from sketchy availability and insane prices due to a global shortage of chips and scalpers. While Xbox Series S and Nintendo Switch been easier to get for a while, the PlayStation 5 remains as rare as ever.

Buying an Xbox Series X can still be an ordeal 17 months after its release, but things are improving as the console can sometimes be found at select retailers for a suggested retail price of $500. Microsoft’s sales skyrocketed as a result, with the Xbox Series X/S bringing in even more money in the first quarter of 2022 than the Nintendo Switch line.

In terms of units sold, Nintendo is still ahead of Microsoft, probably due to the lower price of Switches combined with their wider availability.

Meanwhile, total U.S. gaming hardware sales hit $1.2 billion, down 15% from the first quarter of 2021. The rising cost of living may be why many people are cutting back on discretionary spending. Elden Ring continues to be the top-selling game in March, followed by Gran Turismo 7 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Sony plans to restart PlayStation Plus in June to compete with Microsoft’s hugely successful Game Pass. Hopefully by then the PlayStation 5 will be more affordable.
