What’s new

  • If the “Autodetect passwords” option is enabled in the “Organizer passwords” dialog and among the saved passwords there is a password corresponding to the processing archive, it is applied automatically. This option is applicable only for archives in RAR 5.0 and ZIP formats, which allow you to quickly check if the password is correct. There is a small chance of finding an incorrect password for ZIP archives if the stored passwords do not include the correct password. If the decompression of the encrypted ZIP archive fails, you can try disabling this option, retry decompressing, and enter the correct password manually.
  • If the extraction command affects only a part of the files in the RAR archive, then additional analysis of the archive is performed when the extraction is started. This helps unpack file links correctly even if no link source is selected. It works for most RAR archives, with the exception of volumes on multiple removable media and archives containing a very large number of links. Also, in some cases, such an analysis can help optimize the amount of data being processed when extracting individual files from semi-solid archives created with the -s and -se switches.
  • The “Save the name and time of the original archive” option on the “Options” page of the archive dialog allows you to save the name and time of the creation of the original archive. If the archive contains such a saved name and time, they are displayed on the “Info” page of the “Show Info” command and can be restored on the “Options” page of the same command. Restoring includes renaming the archive to its original name and setting the saved time as the archive creation and modification time. The -ams switch or simply -am along with the archive modification commands can be used to save the archive name and time in command line mode. These saved settings appear in the output header of the “l” and “v” commands and can be restored using the -amr switch in combination with the “ch” command, for example, “rar ch -amr arc.rar”. If the -amr option is specified, “ch” ignores other archive modification options.
  • Faster RAR5 compression of poorly compressible data on modern processors with 8 or more execution threads. This applies to all methods except “Fastest”, whose performance remains the same.
  • Improved efficiency of the “Restore” command for jumbled data blocks in RAR5 archives protected by a restore record.
  • If the file size has increased after archiving when creating non-solid RAR volumes, such a file is saved without compression regardless of the volume number, provided that the file is not split between volumes. Previously, this only worked for files in the first volume.
  • Added unpacking of .zipx archives containing file links, provided that both the link source and target are selected, and the link source comes before the target inside the archive. Generally, if a .zipx archive contains links to files, you must decompress the entire archive in order to successfully extract the links.
  • Added long-range decompression of .zst archives with a dictionary larger than 128MB. Previously, they could only be unpacked if the dictionary was less than 128 MB.
  • If WinRAR has the Turn Off Computer, Hibernate, Hibernate, or Restart Computer archiving options enabled, you will be prompted to confirm or cancel the power management action just before starting it. If the user hasn’t made any selection within 30 seconds, the suggested action is confirmed and starts automatically. This prompt is also displayed for the -ioff switch on the WinRAR command line, but not on the RAR console command line.
  • The context menu in the WinRAR file list contains the command “Open in built-in viewer” for archived files. This can be useful if you want to view the raw archive data in the built-in viewer. For example, to read an email archive with UUE attachments included. The normal “View” command always displays the contents of the archive. If the file is recognized as a UUE archive, Preview will show UUE attachments.
  • The size of the recovery record is displayed on the “Archive” page of the file properties, called from the context menu of the Explorer for archives in RAR5 format. Previously, for RAR5 archives, instead of the exact size, there was only “Present”.
  • When archiving from standard input with the -si option, RAR displays the current number of bytes read as a progress bar.
  • If an incorrect password is specified when adding files to an encrypted RAR5 solid archive, the password will be requested again. Previous versions canceled archiving in this case.
  • If both the “Verify archived files” and “Clear archive attribute after compression” options or their equivalents on the -t -ac command line are enabled when archiving, the Archive attribute will only be cleared if the verification succeeds. Previously, it would reset even when the test reported errors.
  • The NoDrives value containing the bitmask for hiding drives can now be read from the “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\WinRAR\Policy” registry key, allowing it to be enabled in winrar.ini if ​​needed. Also supported are its locations “Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies” under HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Previously, only “Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies” was recognized in HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

Bugs fixed

It did not include the packed size of the portions of the file extending from the previous volume into the calculation.
  • even though the “Set file security” extraction option was disabled by default, the extraction commands in Explorer’s context menu still attempted to recover the NTFS file’s security data.
