Was the PlayStation 4 equipped with a GPU roughly equal to what PC’s graphics card?

Choose your answer and the right choice will be revealed.

There is no exact equivalent because Sony worked with AMD to create a unique APU for the PlayStation 4 that contained a custom Radeon 7970M that itself was a mobile desktop variant of the HD 7970 flagship in early 2011.

Compared to the desktop card, the 7970M was 125MHz slower, had 12 fewer GCN cores, half as many stream processors, and fewer ROPS/texture units, while the PS4’s dedicated GPU reduced those specs by another 50MHz. GCN cores and other settings. , not to mention that the RAM was divided between the GPU and the CPU.

The full-sized Radeon HD 7970 had 3.79 GFLOPS processing power, the 7970M dropped it to 2.17 GFLOPS, and the PS4 GPU cut it down again to 1.76 GFLOPS, roughly on par with the (then) $250 desktop Radeon HD 7850.

Another PC counterpart could be the Radeon R9 280X, which we reviewed in 2018 and compared to more modern GPUs, at par with the GeForce GTX 1050 capable of playing acceptable games at 1080p. Incidentally, the CPU inside the PS4 APU consists of two Jaguar quad-core processors – akin to the rather rare AM1 Athlon SoC.
