Valve takes Steam Deck performance into its own hands, starting with Elden Ring

Why is it important: As Valve releases the Steam Deck to the public, many are wondering how Valve and individual developers will improve portable gaming PC performance in the future. This week, the company began saying it would likely do most of this work itself.

When the Rock Paper shotgun asked Valve predicts that developers will customize PC games specifically for the device, a couple of members of the Steam Deck team responded in the negative. It appears that Valve believes that Steam Deck enhancements should not remain exclusive to Steam Deck. Valve also said last November that it sees no point in developing games only for Steam Deck.

“If we expect people to do some work, it will be work that just makes their game on Steam better overall,” said Steam Deck Designer Jake Rodkin.

Rodkin noted that the developers could improve things like controller support and readability on small screens. However, the UI changes are outside the scope of Steam Deck development and will eventually be implemented in the Big Picture mode in the Windows Launcher. He noted that other Steam Deck game optimizations should improve their performance on lower-spec PCs in general.
