TSMC Announces New 5nm N4P Process

Why is it important: TSMC announced another 5nm process this week – N4P. The company claims that N4P will offer a number of improvements over its previous 5nm nodes, both in terms of performance and energy efficiency. We can see the first N4P products in the second half of 2022.

On Tuesday, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced its an N4P process. The 5nm improvement should provide customers with more choices alongside the N5, N4 and N3 processes.

The silicon manufacturer positions N4P as a refinement of the N5 and N4. TSMC claims the N4P’s performance will be 11 percent better than the N5 and six percent better than the N4. The process should be 22 percent more energy efficient than N5 and have a six percent higher transistor density. It also states that N4P will shorten plate cycle times and simplify the process by reducing the number of masks.

Kevin Zhang, TSMC’s senior vice president of business development, said N4P will offer an “advanced technology platform” for mobile devices and high performance computing.

In the summer, TSMC announced that it would begin production of risky 4nm chips in the third quarter of 2021 – earlier than originally anticipated. He also revealed that his 3nm N3 node will begin mass production in the second half of next year.

TSMC also plans to build a 2nm factory early next year, with another coming soon. The company hopes to start manufacturing 2nm chips by 2024.
