Editor’s opinion: Another year almost in the record book, and that’s reason enough for Time to publish their Top 10 Video Games of 2022. Lists like this are usually disappointing, but it looks like the publication could get it mostly right this time around.
In 10th place is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, a side-scrolling co-op game from Dotemu with pixelated art style and original cartoon voice acting. Shredder’s Revenge has been digitally launched on most major platforms and Limited Run has even made Collector’s Edition which is scheduled to ship in early 2023.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose are ranked 9th and 8th respectively. Lego and Star Wars are two of the most popular brands, and the recently released DLC for Resident Evil adds even more content to an already great game.
The martial arts game Sifu is Time’s seventh favorite after The Last of Us Part 1. The first came out in February for PS4, PS5 and Windows (and earlier this month for Switch) and lets players control a child martial arts master seeking revenge for death of his father. The Last of Us needs no introduction – Part 1 is a remake of the original 2013 game that improves on the overall PS5 formula.
Cat Simulator Stray came in at number five, but it’s more than just doing basic cat activities. The game challenges players to use their skills to survive in the environment, solve puzzles and solve mysteries.
Elden Ring, in fourth place, got off to a fast start, selling over 12 million copies in less than a month (and over 17.5 million as of October). The interactive horror drama Quarry, the spiritual successor to Until Dawn, ranked third after launching in mid-2022. I’m a bit surprised that he finished ahead of some of the other heavyweights on the list, but maybe he’s worth it.
Horizon: Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok took second and first place, respectively, and neither seems out of place here. Horizon Forbidden West currently holds a Metacritic score of 88, while God of War: Ragnarok scores even higher at 94.
Here is a summary of the Time list:
- 10 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
- 9 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
- 8. Resident Evil Village: Shadows of the Rose
- 7. Sifu
- 6. The Last of Us Part 1
- 5. Get lost
- 4. Ring of Elden
- 3. Quarry
- 2. Forbidden Horizon West
- 1. God of War: Ragnarok
