TikTok surpasses 1 billion monthly active users

Big picture: TikTok has eclipsed a major milestone this week as the video and social media service, owned by ByteDance, now has over one billion monthly active users. However, they have a lot to make up for if they want to be number one overall. Facebook last quarter reported that it had 2.90 billion monthly active users, a seven percent increase over the year.

TikTok’s roots date back to late 2016, when ByteDance launched a short video app in China called A.me. The application that was developed in just 200 days, was soon renamed Douyin and within one year has already amassed over 100 million users.

The founder of ByteDance was impressive, but knew that if they didn’t expand globally, someone else would jump in to serve the roughly 80 percent of Internet users outside of China. This prompted ByteDance to go out and acquire North America’s most popular video-sharing app, Musical.ly, for $ 1 billion and create a new platform known as TikTok.

The new ByteDance app has taken the world by storm. In 2018 TikTok past Instagram, YouTube and Facebook will be the most downloaded apps of the year and have continued to increase market share since thendespite some serious privacy concerns. Profitable licensing deals with Sony Music and Warner Music Group late last year only helped expand TikTok’s user base.

Oddly enough, ByteDance continues to use Douyin and TikTok as separate platforms, despite having nearly identical user interfaces. This division is probably due to the strict Chinese censorship laws, and / or privacy concerns in other parts of the world.
