The upcoming iOS 16 update is rumored to bring big changes to the lock screen

Rumor mill: With less than a week left until this year’s WWDC, rumors about what Apple might announce are getting more and more detailed. According to the latest data, Apple’s next major update to its mobile operating system will focus on updating the lock screen.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that iOS 16 will significantly change the lock screen and the Messages app. Rumors of an always-on display have also returned.

Currently, the iPhone lock screen only allows users to access widgets, use Control Center features, and read brief notifications. I use it to read the latest news updates, check the weather, and occasionally pull out a calculator or flashlight. In iOS 16, we could see widget-like wallpapers and other significant changes.

The next major iteration of iOS may also finally introduce an always-on lock screen. There were rumors last year that the iPhone 13 Pro would come with an always-on display that would dynamically drop its refresh rate to 10Hz when not in use to conserve battery life. This feature never came to fruition, but may come to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. The 14 Pro was previously speculated to feature a 48MP camera, a periscope lens, an autofocus front camera, and a new A16 processor.

According to Gurman, the Messages app should be getting social media-like changes, especially for audio messages. tvOS Apple TV will tie in more closely with smart home devices, while macOS may get some redesigned apps.

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith found WebKit update offering significant improvements to iPad multitasking. This change may make its way to iPadOS 16, making it more like a laptop when a keyboard and mouse are connected.

While Apple has made some headway in AR/VR development recently, we don’t expect to see their mixed reality headset next week.

Apple WWDC 2022 starts on Monday, June 6th and runs all week.
