The upcoming AMD RX 7900 XT is rumored to feature 24GB of VRAM and a 384-bit memory bus.

big picture: According to rumors, graphics cards based on the new AMD RDNA3 architecture will debut later this year. The flagship Radeon RX 7900 XT will reportedly feature a multi-chip graphics processor (MCM) with 384MB of Infinity cache and 24GB of GDDR6 memory.

AMD and Nvidia are both expected to release their next generation graphics cards later this year. We already had a lot of leaks related to Nvidia GPUs, so today we will focus on the news regarding future RDNA3-based AMD cards.

Judging by past releases, AMD is likely going to announce more expensive models first, which will be based on the Navi 31 GPU. Rumor has it that it will have a 384-bit memory bus and up to 24 GB of video memory. Assuming the company goes back to using 18Gb/s GDDR6 modules, that would translate into 864GB/s of memory bandwidth.

We already knew that the GPU could have an MCM design, but instead of multiple GCDs (Graphics Computing Chips) as previously suggested, AMD will reportedly use six MCDs (Memory Computing Chips) with one large GCD.

This means that each MCD will have 64MB of L3 cache, for a total of 384MB of what AMD calls Infinity Cache. This is three times that of the monolithic Navi 21 GPU. Splitting the GPU into multiple dies can also improve performance, resulting in lower manufacturing costs.

GCD will be manufactured on one of TSMC’s 5nm process nodes, while MCD will be manufactured on a 6nm node. AMD Zen 3 processors use a similar design as the I/O dies use the less advanced GlobalFoundries process.

The Radeon RX 7900 XT is likely to be the top Navi 31 based SKU (at least until an update comes out). It is reported to arrive in the third or fourth quarter and is rumored to have more than double the gaming performance of the 6900XT.
