The Unity tech demo showcases a realistic digital human rendered in real time.

In short: Rendering 3D graphics in real time has come a long way since the 80s, as we can see in Unity’s “Enemies” tech demo. Apart from the photorealistic person shown throughout the demo, it’s also worth noting the impressive environments and animations that give us an idea of ​​what games will look like in the near future.

Based HereticUnity created his Enemies tech demo to show GDC attendees the team’s achievements in creating digital humans in real time. Emphasizing elements such as photorealistic eyes, hair, skin, the video shows a middle-aged woman playing chess in a transforming room.

A newly developed short film created in Unity was built using the new High Definition Rendering Pipeline (HDRP), Adaptive Probe Volumes and Screen Space Global Illumination (SSGI). The demo also features ray tracing, DLSS, and other technologies not listed.

The use of these technologies and features is reflected in the character model, which is evident in the pronounced wrinkles, the effect of blood flow on the skin, and the strikingly realistic eyes. However, the team paid special attention to the hairstyle of the model.

The developers used the new Unity Hair 3-part solution to create this beautiful long hair. The first part is the hair system responsible for authoring, skinning, strand-based simulation and modeling. The hair shading component then improves the visuals depending on the lighting conditions. The last part is hair rendering, which can create very thin strands and also reduce aliasing.

Some of the mentioned features are already available in Unity 2021.2, and other developers will introduce them in versions 2022.1 or 2022.2. The new technologies introduced in Enemies will appear in the Unity Digital Human 2.0 package, due out in a month or two. Unity will also release the strand-based Hair system on GitHub.
