Big picture: Warner Bros. Pictures is poised to take fans back to where it all began, and the journey begins today with the premiere of The Matrix Resurrections’ first official trailer. There are loads of snippets and Easter eggs in the trailer that fans might also discover if you like this kind of thing.
In the fourth film in the groundbreaking franchise, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity. The trailer opens with Thomas Anderson, aka Neo, visiting a therapist, played by Neil Patrick Harris. He recalls having dreams that “were not just dreams,” and asks if he had lost his mind. Neo doesn’t seem to remember his past, but perhaps it comes back to him in these “dreams.”
Neo and Trinity don’t seem to remember each other either, but they get the feeling they’ve met before.
Beyond the compelling storylines, the trailer impresses with the mind-blowing action sequences we’ve come to expect from the franchise. The first film in the series, which premiered back in 1999, popularized the “bullet” effect that has since been used in countless films and video games.
The Resurrection Matrix will hit theaters and HBO Max for ad-free subscribers on December 22, 2021. This is the last film to be simultaneously shown on the streaming service before Warner Bros. will return to its cinema-oriented strategy.
