Why is it important: Battle Royale has undoubtedly become one of the most dominant formats in multiplayer shooters. Due to the popularity of the genre, fans were surprised when EA Dice announced that BF 2042 would not include a battle royale mode. Despite attempts to rule it out, one enterprising user took advantage of the new Portal feature in the game to create a 100-player Warzone-style battlefield.
Reddit user walking by the handle u / chbmg used the Battlefield 2042 Portal Rules Editor to create a functional 100-player battle royale. Nicknamed “Warfield 100”, BF’s personalized portal offers everything battle royale players love, including pre-game lobbies, transitions to active play areas, random loot and a circular cover map designed to direct survivors towards each other for a spectacular finish.
Players joining Warfield 100 will find themselves in a fairly familiar scenario. After appearing in the pre-game lobby, players are dropped from a parachute with nothing more than a starter pistol and accompanying equipment. From here, the gist is pretty simple: find your loot, stay in the circle, engage your enemies, and survive. The game even features a Gulag-style Warzone prison that gives players the opportunity to rejoin the action again.
While some of the more traditional features of the genre could not be directly created using Portal, the creator of the game mode was able to use the available features and conditions to resemble the behavior of similar BR games. Instead of humming loot chests, on-screen messages alert players to nearby loot. Upon discovery, they must crouch three times, prompting the game to replace their current equipment with the newly discovered weapon.
You won’t find a gas mask here either. The Warfield 100 “circle” is made up of suppressed AI players that form an outer circle, pushing players towards its center, much like Warzone’s throttle. Going outside of the circle AI bots, which are highlighted and clearly visible, you will immediately shoot yourself. Players who have ended prematurely will have many opportunities to escape from prison and redeploy before they are completely destroyed.
While Battlefield 2042 may have experienced an unstable release, that didn’t stop users from leveraging Portal’s ability to create extremely detailed rulesets for custom matches. Earlier this month, fans used Portal to create a BF-themed version of the game. Squid games“s”Red light, green light” the game.
