In short: Chinese flashlight and charger manufacturer Nitecore aims to challenge the traditional camera battery industry with an exciting innovation. The UFZ100 rechargeable Li-ion battery is designed for use in some of Sony’s most popular digital cameras, including the a7 III, a7R III and a7R IV. What makes it unique is the fact that it features a built-in USB-C charging port right on the battery with an LED charging indicator.
A red light means the battery is less than 10 percent charged, blue means less than half capacity, and green means more than 50 percent.
While it is true that most modern digital cameras are capable of charging their built-in battery when connected to a power source, it is also true that many serious photographers use multiple batteries during a photo shoot. Not having to carry a branded charger with you can reduce your daily workload and eliminate the worry of losing your charger.
UFZ100 Provides multiple safety measures including overcharge, overdischarge, overvoltage, overcurrent and short circuit protection. The 2250 mAh battery can take about 500 photos between charges and fully charge in about four hours.
Nitecore has yet to reveal pricing or availability, so it’s not clear what savings buyers can expect – if any. Still, it’s a great idea, even if the era of user-replaceable batteries is largely behind us.
