The Game Awards return on December 8th at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

In a nutshell: The ninth edition of The Game Awards will take place on December 8 and will be streamed live worldwide from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. December seems very far away, but thankfully, until then, there’s plenty of gaming goodness to keep our attention.

The annual video game awards debuted in 2014 after gaming journalist Geoff Keighley broke up with Spike. From 2003 to 2013, the network hosted an annual video game awards show in which Kaylee participated, but the company planned to cut operations for 2014 by moving the show from broadcast television to streaming only.

Kaley expanded and, with Spike’s blessing, created The Game Awards. The first show was hosted at The Axis at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, but the ceremony has since taken place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The only exception was in 2020, when the show was virtually due to the pandemic.

The highlight of each year is the coveted Game of the Year award, and there always seems to be a debate over the winner or which game might have been more deserving. That was the case last year when It Takes Two beat Deathloop, Resident Evil Village and Psychonauts 2 to take home the top honors.

Gamescom 2022 kicks off tomorrow and runs until August 28 in Cologne, Germany. Keighley will be hosting a two-hour Gamescom presentation starting today at 2pm ET, with promises of world premieres, new game announcements and more.

PAX West is also just around the corner, taking place September 2-5 in Seattle, with the Tokyo Game Show kicking off 10 days later on September 15. Blizzard stated that it needed time to “rethink” the event. The company will use the money saved from canceling the show to support its team and continue developing the game.
