In a nutshell: The first season of “House of the Dragon” consists of 10 episodes, which will run until the end of October. If you’re a Game of Thrones fan who’s looking for some entertainment over the next few months and doesn’t mind TV, then you should watch House of the Dragon.
HBO releases first episode House of the Dragon on YouTubegiving despised fans the chance to check out what the show is about without financial commitment.
House of the Dragon is a prequel series set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and follows the decline of House Targaryen and the Targaryen Civil War, better known as the Dance of the Dragons.
The first episode debuted on HBO platforms on August 21, 2022, with subsequent episodes airing every Sunday. Ironically, HBO shared a free episode on YouTube on September 1, the same day that Amazon’s fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power premiered.
Make no mistake, it wasn’t a coincidence. Amazon reportedly spent about $465 million to produce the first season of its new show, and reception has not been overwhelmingly positive. As for Rotten Tomatoes, the first season has an overall audience rating of 39 percent and Amazon has even suspended ratings on its own platform to prevent review bombardment.
HBO clearly saw this as an opportunity to capitalize on Amazon’s difficulties. Moreover, not everyone liked the finale of the Game of Thrones. Offering a free trial of the first episode of a new series may convince some with a bad taste in their mouths to give the franchise another go.
HBO Max requires $9.99 per month for an ad-supported plan or $14.99 per month for an ad-free plan. Paying a full year up front provides an approximately 40 percent discount, bringing the cost down to $69.99 / $104.99 for the ad- or ad-free tier, respectively.
