Tesla to open its Supercharger network to Ford EV owners in 2024

In short: Tesla owners will soon face more competition for Supercharger stations in the US and Canada. Starting in spring 2024, Ford EV owners will have access to more than 12,000 Tesla superchargers. The recently reached agreement effectively doubles the number of fast chargers that will be available to Ford EV drivers.

Ford President and CEO Jim Farley said Widespread access to fast charging is vital to their growth as an EV brand, adding that the announcement comes as they ramp up production of their Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E. Ford is also working on preparing a series of next-generation electric vehicles starting in 2025.

Existing Ford electric vehicles will connect to Tesla chargers using a Tesla-designed adapter, but future models will come with a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. Billing will be handled through the FordPass mobile app.

Tesla leads the electric vehicle industry in U.S. sales, but Ford came in second last year with sales of 61,575 electric vehicles. Access to Tesla’s charging network will no doubt help Blue Oval sell even more electric vehicles, as the deal greatly reduces the anxiety of potential buyers who are still not ready to give up gas-powered vehicles.

The Tesla Supercharger network is one of the best in the business and is a key strength of Tesla. In terms of pure competition, it’s a bit surprising that Tesla is willing to open it up to other electric car makers. On the other hand, this move pushes the entire EV industry (Tesla included) forward and should certainly be profitable for Tesla in terms of access fees.

I would also be interested to hear what existing Tesla owners have to say about this. I have no idea what Supercharger charging looks like today in terms of crowds or waiting in line, but the sudden influx of Ford vehicles will surely have some impact. What will it look like and what will Tesla owners think of it?

Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed, and we do not know how much Ford customers will pay for the electronic pump. This was announced by a representative of Ford. CNBC that prices will be competitive in the market, and that more information will be provided closer to the launch date in early 2024.
