Tesla Self-Driving Full Beta offers automated driving profiles that can perform rolling stops.

In short: Tesla’s Full Self-Drive (FSD) technology is currently in beta testing and continues to receive regular feature updates. Some of them include minor changes and improvements, but the latest version of the software is significantly more significant, at least on paper. It allows users to choose from three different FSD driving profiles: cold, medium and assertive.

As the names suggest, these profiles are pre-configured for drivers with varying levels of confidence in Tesla technology. For example, if you don’t trust the FSD’s capabilities, you can stick with the Cold Driving Mode. According to Tesla, this provides “greater travel distance” and results in your car performing “fewer speed changes.”

The Assertive profile is the complete opposite: it has the shortest following distance of the three modes, performs “more frequent” lane changes, does not leave the lane, and can do what Tesla calls “stop-on-the-go”. The mode description does not indicate what situations might induce a vehicle with FSD to make such a “stop”.

We should note that, assuming Tesla is using the generally accepted definition of the term, rolling stops may be illegal depending on where you live and what prompts you or your vehicle to do them. We will contact Tesla for clarification on the use of this term.

The last profile offered here is Medium, which combines both modes. This gives Tesla vehicles an “average” driving distance at a standard lane change frequency. The vehicle can still make roll-over stops if it deems necessary or helpful.

YouTube DÆrik tried these three modes, trying each one on the same route. You can watch the video above – I watched it myself, but, to be honest, I didn’t notice much difference between the profiles. Derik and his partner admitted this as well, but it’s worth noting that they drove mostly non-stop on secondary roads. I have seen several stop signs or situations where there would be noticeably less or more distance to follow. As such, your mileage may vary and you should always take great care when using any form of driver assistance; FSD included.
