Star Citizen’s single-player element, Squadron 42, is still ‘one or two years away’

What just happened? Even if you’re not at all interested in playing Star Citizen, the prospect of a single-player Squadron 42 filled with Hollywood stars is enticing. Unfortunately, according to the developer, the game is still at least a year or two away from completion.

It was back in 2018, before the coronavirus pandemic, when Squadron 42 received its all-star trailer, showcasing the likes of Gillian Anderson, Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, John Rhys Davis, Liam Cunningham, Ben Mendelsohn and Henry. Cavill. Months later, developer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) announced that it was scheduled to launch in Summer 2020, but as we know, that never happened.

Those who were expecting the game were especially disappointed at the end of 2020 when studio boss Chris Roberts said it would be “done when it’s ready”. 42 Squadron was also noticeably absent from CitizenCon last October.

For those hoping 2022 could be the year we finally see what could be a modern take on Roberts’ classic Wing Commander series, CIG COO Carl Jones confirmed in a recent issue of the magazine. MCV/Development that this won’t happen.

The relocation of CIG’s headquarters to Manchester and plans to hire 1,000 additional employees appear to be keeping Roberts, who lived in Los Angeles, very busy.

“I think we’ll see how long [Roberts] should be finished [in the UK]”, Jones said. “But yes, it could be another year or two. He’s spending more time here with the Squadron 42 team and with our other developers, but this year he’s moving out for longer periods of time. Hopefully that means that we can complete 42 Squadron faster. We want to finish this game, but it will be over when it’s ready.”

While it has now raised over $400 million in crowdfunding and has several playable elements, we still don’t know when the final version of Star Citizen will arrive. Pre-production for the game started about 11 years ago, and its drawn-out development has been exacerbated by Covid, so it remains to be seen if Squadron 42’s single-player campaign will actually arrive within the next year or two.
