SpaceX Seeks To Expand Starlink Broadband Internet With High-Performance, Durable Car Antenna

In a nutshell: SpaceX has filed an application with the FCC, requesting a general license for its “high-performance ground stations in motion,” or ESIM, which will help expand Starlink broadband internet to moving vehicles such as cars, boats, and airplanes. The new cymbals will also feature improved connectivity and a robust design to withstand harsh environmental conditions.

With Elon Musk’s plans to launch Starlink globally this month, it should come as no surprise that SpaceX is preparing a new, improved Starlink dish to rapidly expand broadband services to mobile users.

IN recent submission with FCC, SpaceX Notes (edit) that its new high-performance Starlink dish will operate with higher gain and lower transmit power, a higher scan angle (minimum tilt angle of 25 degrees), and will have reliable performance to keep going in harsh environments. The company already filed an application to use its next-generation cymbal on moving vehicles (cars, boats, and airplanes) a couple of months ago, although no “enhanced” version was specified at the time.

During the Starlink beta test, the dish went to thermal shutdown for an Arizona user by leaving it offline for 7 hours until the temperature reached 122F / 50C. While no temperature limits have been specified for the new model, SpaceX says the saucer will be able to withstand higher temperature / cold extremes, will have improved snow / ice melting characteristics, and will withstand more heat cycles.

SpaceX hasn’t shared any designs for its upcoming saucer, but some exterior changes can be expected, given that it will need to be integrated with planes, ground vehicles and ships. Starlink currently costs $ 499 per terminal and at the expense of SpaceX, so it will be interesting to see how the next-gen dish affects that price.
