Why is it important: Are you hoping to get your hands on the elusive PlayStation 5 this holiday season, but are worried that your chances are somewhere between low and zero? Sony is giving American shoppers a glimmer of hope by allowing them to register for PS5 restocking events.
Sony emphasizes that it will have a limited number of PS5 consoles available for purchase by US buyers, so if you would like to get an invite to a restocking event, sign here without delay.
Anyone wishing to participate requires a US address and PlayStation Network ID – you need to sign in to your PSN account and subscribe to Sony’s marketing emails.
This does not guarantee that you will receive an invitation. Sony says its selection process is based on PlayStation’s previous interests and activities. While there is some ambiguity as to what exactly this means, it probably needs to be verified that the accounts are not created by speculators with the sole purpose of buying a PS5 and then selling it for a fortune on eBay.
Sony also says it limits pre-orders for the PS5 console to one per PSN ID – that’s one PS5 console or one digital PS5, not both.
Starting November 2021, selected members will receive an email with the date, time and instructions for purchasing the PS5 console. The invitees have a limited time to book the order, the exact information about which will be indicated in the notification.
The PlayStation 5 was one of the consumer products hit hardest by chip shortages. AMD, whose custom SoC is used for the PS5, believes the situation won’t start to improve until the second half of 2022. Back in May, Sony said PS5 production would pick up in the second half of this year and that it was “hoping” for shipments. will improve this holiday season, but don’t hold your breath.
