Snapchat goes online after over a decade of mobile exclusivity

Why is it important: Rolling out the web portal after more than a decade of mobile-only service is a curious move that suggests Snap follows its core user base as they age and transition from mobile to large-screen computers in the office.

Mobile communication platform Snapchat is finally available online, but you need to be a paid subscriber or live in a certain region to try it out.

Snapchat for web includes some of the best features of the messaging app, including chat reply and chat reaction. We were told that others would be coming soon, such as Lenses. Through the web portal, users will be able to start a call or pick up where they left off on their mobile phone.

According to ClickOver 330 million people use Snapchat on their phones every day, and over 100 million Snapchat users use the app’s voice and video calling features on a monthly basis.

Snapchat+ subscribers in the US, UK and Canada can try Snapchat for web using Chrome from today, just like regular Snapchat users in Australia and New Zealand. Support for additional browsers will be added at a later date.

Snapchat launched a paid subscription last month, offering members exclusive access to experimental and preview features for $3.99 a month. Notably, the paid tier does not exclude ads.

Snap shares are up nearly three percent on the news but are down nearly 70 percent year-to-date.
