Sega’s Sonic Origins Retro Bundle goes on sale June 23rd.

In short: This summer, Sega will release remasters of several classic Sonic the Hedgehog games as part of a new collection called Sonic Origins. It will be available on almost every major modern platform, including Nintendo Switch and PC, for less than $40.

Sega announced the set almost a year ago as part of the blue mascot’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Sonic Origins was originally supposed to include five games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles.

beam however, it will release on June 23 and will only contain four games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were originally supposed to be the same game, but time and financial issues forced the developers to split them into two separate projects. Sonic 3 came out first in early 1994, followed by Sonic & Knuckles just in time for the holiday season.

The latest game featured a unique “lock-in” pass-through port on the top of the cartridge, allowing you to plug in Sonic 3 and play them as a combo experience as originally intended.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is essentially a bundled game that will replace the two separate games in the bundle. It’s not clear why Sega decided to go down this route instead of releasing two separate games, but some have speculated that it could be related to the music licensing issue in Sonic 3.

Sonic Origins will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC on June 23rd. Now Sega accepts pre-orders for the standard version starting at $39.99.
