Sega Says Its Super Game Will Not Be Exclusive To Microsoft

Why is it important: When Sega announced that it was working with Microsoft on the “Super Game” initiative, some may have worried that working with the console manufacturer would involve some kind of exclusive deal. Sega recently allayed those concerns with financial results. However, we still don’t know what a Super Game is.

In its presentation of results for the fiscal year ending March 2022, Sega refined a previously announced partnership with Microsoft on the mysterious Super Game. Sega does not plan to use Azure to create games exclusively for Microsoft, but rather uses their technology to bring Super Game “along with their technical support to the world.” Presumably, this means that whatever the Super Game is, it won’t be exclusive to Xbox and Windows.

Sega indicated that it has outsourced large-scale game development to Microsoft in the past (although it did not mention specific titles) and that it maintains a close relationship with Microsoft. Sega said the Redmond giant was sympathetic to her vision for the Super Game.

No one is even sure if Super Game refers to just one name, as Sega seems to use the singular and plural words “game” interchangeably when referring to the project. Sega previously envisioned Super Game as a new way of developing games for wider global reach using next-generation technologies. This could mean a new type of online game, or simply a cloud-based method of optimizing game development to meet the challenges of creating games for the latest generation platforms.

In any case, Sega’s comments give the impression that Microsoft is not using Azure specifically to pin developers or products exclusively to its own platforms.
