Gaming chairs don’t help you play your games the way the manufacturers want them to. They usually just mimic the aesthetics of a racing seat and often have more adjustment options than your standard cheap office chair. But there is a lot of of these types of chairs, and not every company places a lot of emphasis on comfort or durability.
This is what makes Secretlab stand out. It was founded in 2014 by former esports players Alaric Chu and Ian Ang, and the company quickly built a reputation for quality materials by using the finest materials and offering a decent warranty (three years, but this can be extended to five years for $ 50 or via social sharing your seat in the media). Its new Titan Evo 2022 gaming chair is even more sophisticated than ever with improved support and increased durability.
Changes under the seat
I had no problem building the Evo. The finished piece features an angular design with a gold T on the back next to Secretlab logos, carbon-effect panels and red stitching against a black PU leather backdrop. It’s clearly a gaming chair, but not as flashy as many of the others. There are many other color schemes and finishes available, all more dramatic than the typical office chair.
The first thing I noticed when I jumped into the seat was the resistance of the cold curing foam. This type of foam retains its shape for a longer time. It was frustrating at first, but it is very supportive and has proven to be comfortable for several hours of continuous sitting.
Secretlab reports that the Titan Evo 2022 has been in development for two years. If you’ve seen its predecessors, you’ll be interested to know what it took two years for, because it looks a lot like it. But all the improvements are under the upholstery. First, it now has clearer size options: Small, Regular, and XL.
The company also relied on magnets – the memory foam cushion, removable padded armrests and panels that hide the side bolts are magnetized so you can easily remove or put them on. The magnetic cushion is one of my favorite parts of this chair. It’s fun and gets rid of the unsightly back strap. It doesn’t slip out of position easily, and a layer of cooling gel inside is very welcome on a warm day.
The idea of interchangeable magnetic armrests seemed more of a gimmick. The set that comes with the chair is lovely and I wondered why change them. But Secretlab then sent me Technogel armrests to give me a try and … now I get it. They are amazing. They are not only incredibly soft and supportive, but also have a cooling effect. They will be an optional update soon, but no pricing has been announced yet.
Most importantly, the Titan Evo offers great customization. More ways to adjust your chair means you can make it exactly fit your body, helping you sit more comfortably and more ergonomically.
The dials on the left and right adjust the height and curvature of the lumbar support to match your spine. This reinforced lumbar support is the biggest improvement over previous Secretlab chairs and contributes to good posture. The levers under the Titan Evo adjust the height and engage the tilt lock, and there is a tilt lever on the right. I appreciate the wide tilt range, but if you lean back as you pull on the lever, it can jam and then suddenly unpleasantly popping. The armrests are also fully adjustable. You can move them back and forth, from side to side, adjust the height and angle.
