What happened now? Film about Super Mario Bros. caused controversy online, as it always does when beloved video games are turned into movies/cartoons/TV shows. Nintendo’s iconic Italian plumbers won’t hit the big screen until April next year, but we’ve just been handed a second trailer to sort out.
In the first trailer for Super Mario Bros. Movie, released last month, focused on Bowzor, the voice of Jack Black. The new clip gives us more of Mario, whose choice of voice actor – Chris Pratt – has caused controversy. The mustachioed hero doesn’t say very many lines in his controversial accent, so make whatever you want out of it.
The trailer also marks the debut of Princess Peach, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, best known for her role as chess prodigy Beth Harmon in The King’s Gambit. There’s also Luigi, voiced by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Day Charlie, and Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong, remastered for the first time since the transition to 3D, that slaps Mario a little.
Other voice actors for the film include Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.
The new trailer has plenty of advice for various Mario games, including Donkey Kong and Smash Bros. There is also a reference to Mario Kart at the end when the character is driving down Rainbow Road. There is no denying that it all looks very visually impressive.

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the Super Mario Bros. movie, from Chris Pratt’s voice to Mario’s butt or lack of it. It wasn’t on the same level as the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which ended up being shelved so the animators could redesign Sonic after the outrage. Ultimately, of course, it turned out to be one of the most popular video game-based films, and its sequel just got even better.
The two trailers suggest that the movie will be closer in quality to Sonic than the Super Mario Bros. game. 1993, but we’ll see. Everything will be known on April 7, 2023.
