Samsung shares plans for 1,000 V-NAND and GDDR7 layers at annual tech conference

What happened now? Samsung at its annual Tech Day conference in San Jose unveiled fifth generation 10nm class (1b) DRAM as well as eighth and ninth generation vertical NAND (V-NAND) technology. The new 1-bit DRAM is expected to enter mass production in 2023, but Samsung is already hard at work trying to overcome scaling issues beyond 10nm.

The company believes that breakthroughs in patterns, architecture, and materials will further reduce the process, and one example of a promising technology is the High-K material, which is already in development.

Samsung was repetition its V-NAND technology is ten years old and has gone through several generations. The juice is no doubt worth the squeeze as Samsung has implemented a 10x increase in the number of layers and a 15x increase in bits over eight generations.

TLC’s 1TB V-NAND will be available to customers by the end of the year, and work is underway on the ninth generation V-NAND, scheduled for mass production in 2024. By 2030, Samsung expects to assemble more than 1,000 layers into its V-NAND.

Samsung Tech Day has been held annually since 2017. This year’s conference marked the return of face-to-face presence after the pandemic. More than 800 customers and partners attended the one-day event at the Hilton San Jose, according to Samsung.

The OEM is also accelerating the transition to Quad-Cell Flash (QLC) while improving energy efficiency. Samsung said that this improvement will especially help those who work with artificial intelligence and big data applications.

Samsung also touched briefly on its GDDR7 DRAM memory. At 36 Gb/s, data transfer rates are twice that of GDDR6 and can help provide significantly more bandwidth for high-end GPUs that will roll off the production lines in the not-too-distant future.

Jung-bae Lee, head of memory at Samsung, said the company has produced one trillion gigabytes of memory over the past 40-plus years. Remarkably, about half of this capacity has been produced in the last three years alone, highlighting the unprecedented demand as our digital evolution continues.
