Ridley Scott Says The Last Duel Failed Over Millennials And Their “Fucking Cell Phones”

Hot potatoes: Ridley Scott has been behind the scenes in some of cinema’s greatest and most iconic films – Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator and more. His latest proposal, “The Last Duel,” is another one that has received rave reviews from critics, but it hasn’t hit the box office. According to the director, apathetic millennials and “their damn mobile phones” are to blame.

Scott used his appearance on Mark Maron’s WTF podcast to explain why he thought The Last Duel went so badly. “I think it all comes down to what we have today [are] an audience raised on these fucking cell phones, he said. [sic] I never want to be taught anything if you didn’t say it on your cell phone. “

“It’s a big move, but I think we’re dealing with it now with Facebook,” added the 83-year-old director. “This is a misdirection that I think has given rise to misconceptions in this last generation.”

For those who don’t know, Millennials usually refer to those born between 1981 and 1996.

Starring Ben Affleck, Jody Comer, Matt Damon and Adam Driver, The Last Duel is an epic historical drama set in 14th century France and tackling the social issues of today. It has 85% Rating “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience rating of 81%.

But despite all the accolades, The Last Stand recouped just $ 27 million out of a $ 100 million budget. Scott emphasized that Disney did everything it could to promote the film. “Disney has done a fantastic promotion job,” he said. “The bosses liked the movie […] I was worried that it was not for them. “

This isn’t the first time Scott has drawn the ire of a certain demographic. He recently called superhero films “damn boring shit,” and in 2017 said he would rather “keep making smart films” than any films featuring DC and Marvel characters. He wasn’t a big fan of Epic Games’ version of Apple’s 1984 ad either – Scott filmed the original.

Covid, of course, continues to influence moviegoers, with many people choosing to watch blockbusters like superhero movies on the big screen while waiting for the likes of The Last Duel to hit streaming services. Scott’s next film, House of Gucci, will be released this week. He’ll probably hope millennials can stop using their phones long enough to enjoy them, although early reviews was not so positive
