Relive the golden years of gaming this Friday when GoldenEye 007 debuts on Nintendo Switch.

Very expected: Am I sleeping? I literally haven’t played GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64 since the early 2000s because… well, I haven’t had an N64 since the early 2000s. However, this system and the Star Wars series are the games I miss the most. This week I will be able to experience the nostalgia for this classic gaming product on my Nintendo Switch.

Last September, Nintendo confirmed that GoldenEye 007 was “coming soon” to the Switch Online N64 emulator. Since then, fans have been waiting with bated breath for more information, especially when they could get their hands on it, but we have received nothing but silence from MI6.

On Wednesday, Nintendo finally announced the release date for GoldenEye via Twitter and YouTube. It states that the game will appear on the Expansion Pack Subscription Service on Friday. Happy dance.

Enter the world of espionage as Bond in GoldenEye 007. Your covert operation to stop the GoldenEye military satellite spans the entire globe – you will infiltrate underground bases, break through a military train and make your way into the depths of the jungle. Along the way, M will inform you of your goals and Q Branch will support your efforts with a variety of gadgets, but the ultimate success of this mission is up to you. Save the day, then go for the gold in spy vs. spy local or online four-player multiplayer mode and enjoy round after round of competitive first-person action.

For fans, this is good news. It was arguably one of the best, if not the best, 007 game on any platform. Has it survived over the past two and a half decades (August 23 he turns 25)? Judging by all the DMCA mods and fan-made remakes over the past few years, interest is still very high. And since Nintendo’s hawkish legal team literally scuttled every effort to bring the game to today’s gamers, new and old, it’s likely many downloads from GoldenEye will be lost.

Keep in mind that this is not a remake. This is the original GoldenEye 007 released in 1997 which is not bad. It even retains its four-player mode. In 1997, it was a couch-based split-screen competitive action game with four controllers. Since Nintendo is using the original game, nothing has changed. So when playing locally with friends, you’ll need an original Switch (not Lite) connected to your TV for it to be a viable way to play. However, Nintendo has added an online multiplayer mode that apparently allows users to play full-screen competitive matches.

The game will also be available on Xbox via Game Pass or Rare Replay.
