Qualcomm is updating its lineup with new entry-level and mid-range SoCs.

In short: Qualcomm has announced four new SoCs, updating its entry-level and mid-range offerings. Some of them bring a simple jump in clock speed, like the Snapdragon 480+ and 778G +, but the Snapdragon 680 and 695 have incremental upgrades over their predecessors, such as a new technology node and mmWave 5G support.

While Qualcomm is the best choice for high-end SoCs for Android phones, Mediatek’s market share continues to grow thanks to its presence in the entry-level and mid-range segments. Qualcomm will refreshing its lineup includes four new chipsets to better compete in these markets, including two improved versions of the chips currently available. Three of them offer 5G support, but there is also a 4G-only SoC.

The Snapdragon 778G + will be an improved version of the original 778G, with 8 Kryo 670 CPU cores (6nm node) that can accelerate to 2.5GHz up from 2.4GHz, and the Adreno 642L GPU that Qualcomm promises to offer 20 percent above. performance than its predecessor. All other specs remain the same, including the X53 5G modem, AI capabilities, and triple ISP (Spectra 570L).

The Snapdragon 695, based on the Snapdragon 690, brings mmWave and 5G sub-6GHz support, adding a new 5G mid-range alternative. Compared to its predecessor, the Snapdragon 695 delivers 30 percent faster graphics rendering with its Adreno 619L GPU and 15 percent faster processor performance with 8 Kryo 660 cores based on a 6nm node.

The Snapdragon 680 is the only 4G SoC in the group to feature a Snapdragon X11 LTE modem. Like other chips, it is also based on a 6nm node with 8 Kryo 265 cores, Adreno 610 GPU, FastConnect 6100 subsystem, Spectra 346 triple ISP and QC3 support.

Finally, there is the Snapdragon 480+, which, as the name suggests, is an improved Snapdragon 480. In addition to increasing the clock speed from 2.0GHz to 2.2GHz in 8 Kryo 460 cores (8nm node), it is also equipped with modem X51, providing support for sub-6 and mmWave 5G. The GPU remains the same Adreno 619 as well as the Spectra 345 triple ISP.

Several companies have expressed interest in using these SoCs in the future, including HMD Global (Nokia), Honor, Motorola, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi. We should see the first devices on the new Qualcomm SoCs later this year or early 2022.
