Rumor mill: Many wondered what the next acquisition of Sony’s gaming studio would be. The new PlayStation Studios banner may give us the answer. A close look reveals an image of Death Stranding, suggesting that Kojima Productions could soon become the property of PlayStation Studio.
Kojima Productions has always had a good relationship with Sony. Eventually, Kojima announced that the studio’s first game would be a console exclusive for the PlayStation 4. However, the developer remains independent of Sony, but that could change soon.
New banner on the PlayStation Studios website shows some significant changes. Sony has changed the images of Horizon, Gran Turismo and MLB and introduced the Demon’s Souls remake slot. Perhaps even more striking is the Death Stranding image that replaces the Concrete Genie segment on the far left.
The games featured on the PlayStation Studios banner have historically been associated with Sony’s own studio. Returns, for example, were introduced only after Sony announced the acquisition of Housemarque. It follows that Kojima Productions, developer of Death Stranding, will soon become Sony’s own game studio.
Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima founded Kojima Productions after leaving Konami in 2015. The studio has since developed Death Stranding for PS4, PC, and PS5. The company is reportedly working on a new untitled horror game. The studio also handles television, music and film through a new division recently opened in California.
Sony acquired Haven, Bluepoint Games, Housemarque, Nixxes Software and Firesprite last year. The company also offered $3.6 billion for Bungie back in January. However, the acquisition has yet to be approved by all regulatory authorities. Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan declared that despite all the game studios Sony has acquired in recent months, there are plans to buy even more.
This won’t be the first time a purchase has been leaked, as seen in Bluepoint’s welcome image. a leak. However, Sony has not announced anything official. Death Stranding was a PlayStation exclusive, like the rest of the banner. So it could very well be that Sony is just giving Death Stranding room to recognize it as one of their many exclusive games, and nothing more.
