Nvidia may have sold more RTX 3090 cards than the entire Radeon RX 6000 series combined

Why is it important: AMD may be wrestling with Intel in the consumer processor market, stepping back from its rival’s lead since the launch of Ryzen, but it hasn’t achieved the same commercial success with its latest graphics cards: there may be more Nvidia users. The RTX 3090 is more expensive than the entire Radeon RX 6000 series combined.

The revelation comes from the July Steam Reviewwhich collects system information from Steam users who choose to participate. In the All Graphics Cards section of last month, the Radeon RX 6000 series is missing. This is not unusual since RDNA 2 has never been in this category, despite the fact that the Radeon RX 6800 and Radeon RX 6800 XT were released last November.

But Redditor @zyck_titan found that RDNA 2 is an hidden in the poll: in ‘Vulkan Systems… ‘They are not in the main category because any particular card must have at least 0.15% stake to be eligible for the All Graphics section.

“If you compare Vulkan Systems stock with the general stock listed on [the Steam hardware survey] you will see that the share of all cards in Vulkan Systems is twice as large. So just divide by two to get the total share, ”they wrote.

The Radeon 6800 XT is as popular as the GTX 650 Ti.

When using this method, the most popular RDNA 2 card is the Radeon RX 6700 XT with a 0.11% share. It is followed by the RX 6800 XT (0.10%), the RX 6900 XT (0.08%) and the RX 6800 (0.05%) for a total of 0.34%. Nvidia’s Ampere lineup, which all fall in the main category, account for 3.98%.

Probably the most striking statistic here is that each RTX 3000 series card has a larger market share than the AMD Radeon RX 6000 series combined. Even the flagship RTX 3090, which you’re unlikely to find at $ 1,499 MSRP, boasts a 0.38% share.

The biggest changes are from the All Graphics Cards category. It was a good month for Ampere

While the Radeon RX 6000 cards can match the Ampere’s performance in many ways, affordability was a big issue. AMD GPUs are supplied by TSMC, which has dedicated most of its manufacturing capacity to the PS5 / XBSX consoles. In the meantime, Nvidia has moved from TSMC to Samsung for the consumer RTX 3000 series.
