New build of Windows 11 available to Insiders fixes AMD performance issues

In the mirror: Recent releases of Windows 11 have brought several documented performance issues to AMD users. A blog post from the Windows Insider team indicates that a fix for L3 cache performance and other performance issues is on the horizon and is already being rolled out through the Beta and Release Preview channels.

Microsoft added the injury insult during the last patch release on Tuesday. The Windows 11 update patch, intended to address issues in the new operating system, has instead made it even harder for the already degraded performance that many AMD users are experiencing. Fortunately, recent announcement by the Insider Program team, points out that relief is just around the corner.

On Friday, the team announced that Windows 11 Build 22000.282 has been released to Insiders with access to the Beta and Release Preview channels. This build includes many fixes for the new OS, with the Ryzen-based Level 3 (L3) caching issue at the top of the list. If successful, this fix can restore up to 15 percent of lost performance in some gaming tasks and esports games.

The L3 cache is one of three specialized memory caches that work together to improve compute performance and ensure that multi-core processors have access to adequate and timely data and instructions. Microsoft and AMD acknowledged the initial L3 caching issue shortly after the release of the first Insider Preview build. The issue increases L3 cache latency on all supported AMD Ryzen processors. as a result when the frame rate drops by 10–20 percent per second.

Since the test build of the update is currently under evaluation, there is reason to believe that the majority of users will see the update as early as next week.

While the update will potentially fix the L3 cache issue, it does not address issues related to multi-core processors and single-threaded workloads. These additional issues will be addressed with an updated chipset driver package from AMD.
