Nearly 30 percent of new GitHub code is written using AI.

In short: Artificial intelligence and machine learning continue to gain ground in the modern era. Almost all of us rely on these technologies in one form or another, and GitHub programmers certainly fall into this category. Since the release of Copilot on the website in June, nearly 30 percent of the new code has been written using AI.

If you haven’t heard of Copilot before, it’s essentially the equivalent of the predictive text input systems you’ll find in Gmail or even on your phone. You start typing a line of code, and Copilot can autocomplete it for you – or try to do it anyway.

Impressively more than 50 percent coders who chose Copilot continued to use it after the first use. We don’t know how long they continue to use it, but it’s still a good sign if such a huge proportion of GitHub users don’t just give up on the technology after the first try.

“We hear a lot from our users that their coding practices have changed with Copilot,” said Aage de Moore, vice president of the Copilot group at GitHub Next. “Overall, they can become a lot more productive in their coding.”

It is not hard to see why this is so. Copilot can automatically fill in large chunks of code, and while there may be bugs here and there, it still saves a lot of time in the long run. This can help save the programmer from typing repetitive boilerplate and allow them to focus more on polishing.

Right now, the Copilot feature on GitHub is only available for a few programming languages, including Ruby, TypeScript, and JavaScript. Moving forward, de Moore and company. I plan to add support for additional languages, or at least the most popular of the existing ones. This feature is certainly not ideal, but the more users use it, the more difficult it will become over time.
