Microsoft Surface Duo 2 offers better performance and cameras than the original. But foldable devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 offer a better full screen mode than this dual-screen device.

At over $ 1,500, anything about the Surface Duo 2 is no easy task. You can do the same with your iPad Mini along with your phone for a third of the price. If the first Surface Duo was 50 percent ready, the Duo 2 was perhaps 75 percent. I see potential. But, unfortunately, this does not happen.

Like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Duo 2 is going through an identity crisis of sorts. None of the devices work well as phone replacements, but at least the foldable Samsung has solid software and good cameras. Despite the improvements, the Duo 2 is still a gimmick of sorts that requires a lot of download and should only be bought by people who have $ 1,500 and who really want a dual-screen phone.

For a device like Surface Duo 2 to be worth it, the experience with a dual-screen app needs to be significantly better than a single-screen app. This is not the case today because there are still so many popular applications that are not optimized. A bigger issue could be that the Surface Duo 2 still feels too awkward to use as an everyday phone, which results in a learning curve at best and overall uncomfortable at worst. On top of that, there are still some software performance issues.

The Microsoft ecosystem is valuable if you need to be there, and the Duo 2 could be a good phone for anyone equally interested in dual-pane Outlook and Gears 5 streaming over 5G. If that’s all you need from your phone, Duo 2 is the way to go. But I have to remind you of the price tag. Is this experience worth $ 1,500? If you ask me, no. It’s hard for me to even imagine a consumer who will recoup their money with Duo 2.

Microsoft still believes in a dual-screen phone / tablet hybrid. His vision is coming, but not quite. Hold onto Surface Duo 3.

Microsoft Surface Duo 2 solves almost every problem we had with the original. This is an unusual phone that is a pleasure to use.

The Surface Duo 2 is much better than Microsoft’s first try. It’s not a mainstream phone for most people, but it’s worth looking into if you’re looking for something more unique than a regular phone, or if you think it might be useful to run two apps side-by-side. I prefer the flexibility of Samsung’s pricier $ 1,800 Galaxy Z Fold 3 and appreciate the water resistance of this phone, so you should also take a look.

Unfortunately, the Duo 2 isn’t quite ready for the average consumer yet. Aside from the $ 1,499 price tag, poor camera performance and still faulty software make it difficult to recommend. However, I appreciate what Microsoft is trying to do here, and I hope that in the next generation all Duo 2 problems will be resolved.

Hands up: The Surface Duo 2 is much better than the original Surface Duo and is incredibly close to being a solid finished product. However, some small UI bugs do occur occasionally, and having only 8GB of RAM is an odd decision for a performance-oriented device. However, this is the only such device, so if you like this idea, it is probably for you.

The Duo 2 costs $ 1,499 and is a high-end dual-screen phone with features and equipment to match its price. It is still intended for the more specialized consumer who wants to focus on doing more at once. With upgraded hardware and expected flagship features for 2021, this is more of a performance phone with a multitude of ways to control entertainment and games. The Duo 2 is ultimately best for those looking to focus on two apps at once and looking for a device that puts performance at the fore.

Overall, I really like the Surface Duo 2. There is something nice and delightful about it, and its performance is very real. If you spend a lot of time working on the road, you will find it very helpful to have one app on one screen and another on the other.
