Microsoft Releases Fix for Game Performance Issues Caused by Windows 11 22H2 Update

What happened now? If you’re one of the many who’s having gaming performance issues on their PC after installing the Windows 11 22H2 update, here’s some good news: Microsoft is finally releasing a fix with the optional cumulative preview update KB5020044 for November.

Microsoft began rolling out the Windows 11 2022 update, also known as the 22H2 update, to more than 190 countries at the end of September. As is always the case with updates of this size, users began to experience issues including blue screens of death and game performance issues such as stuttering, G-Sync impact, and audio anomalies.

Some, but not all, game freezes were caused by a single driver issue. Nvidia addressed this in September, advising users to update their GeForce app to the latest version.

It took Microsoft over a month to admit that Windows 11 22H2 was killing gaming performance, which it confirmed was caused by certain games and apps inadvertently activating GPU performance debugging features not intended for consumer use. The Redmond-based firm said a couple of weeks ago that they were working on a fix, and now it’s ready.

KB5020044 preview the update is optional. If you’re not running a Windows Insider build, you’ll need to download it manually; go to “Settings” then “Windows Update” and click “Check for updates” to download and install it.

The update contains many updates and fixes in addition to fixing game performance issues. Some highlights include Microsoft OneDrive subscribers receiving storage alerts on the Systems page in the Settings app. It also provides full storage for all OneDrive subscriptions, displays total storage on the Accounts page in the Settings app, and integrates Windows Spotlight with themes on the Personalization page.

Microsoft writes that due to minimal operations during the holidays and the upcoming Western New Year, this will be the last non-security preview release for 2022. Check out all the details of the update. here.
