Promising: Microsoft was buying up game studios right and left, trying to catch up with Sony. PlayStation exclusives – for both past and current generations – have attracted millions of customers to the platform. Microsoft has spent billions in recent months recruiting developers to expand its list of games, but the rise in spending has not yet ended.
The Wall Street Journal recently interviewed Microsoft VP of Games and Head of Xbox Phil Spencer. During the Tech Live Publishing Event, Spencer confirmed The Xbox is still poised to buy more game studios if the opportunity arises.
“We are definitely not finished yet. There is no quota, no schedule when I have to buy studios by a certain time, but if we find a studio that suits us … definitely, “Spencer said.
Last year, Microsoft demonstrated its intention to give console owners more exclusives by purchasing Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax for $ 7.5 billion. Several developers besides the creator of Fallout were involved in the deal, including id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames and others.
Prior to this blockbuster, Microsoft also increased its purchasing power by purchasing Devil May Cry developer Ninja Theory, inXile Entertainment, and Mojang Studios, the creator of Minecraft.
Meanwhile, Sony is posting record sales for the PlayStation 5, primarily due to the momentum carried over from the PlayStation 4. The latest generation console boasts an extensive lineup of exclusives. The PS4 became the clear bestseller of the Xbox One, selling 60 million more units than Microsoft’s system.
In addition to several in-house developers such as Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog, Sony has also added to its lineup by purchasing Demon’s Souls remake developer Bluepoint Games. What’s more, she paid $ 229 million for Insomniac Games, best known for the Ratchet & Clank franchise.
Of course, Microsoft has access to a much larger war chest than Sony. As such, the Redmond-based tech giant could make significant headway in the console wars if it can replicate Bethesda’s buyout and take control of even more established studios. The company has already made notable progress in attracting consumers with Xbox Game Pass, a service that has established itself as Netflix for gaming.
However, Sony and Microsoft have one thing in common – catching up with the Nintendo Switch. Hybrid gaming has dominated the sales charts for both the current and previous generation of consoles since its launch more than four years ago.
