Micron begins shipping ‘world’s most advanced DRAM’ using 1-beta node

In short: Micron is currently shipping qualifying samples of what it claims is the world’s most advanced DRAM node. After the mass delivery of 1-alpha in 2021, the new 1-beta LPDDR5X is better in almost every way. According to Micron, the node is about 15 percent more power efficient and provides more than a 35 percent improvement in bit density at 16 Gb per die.

Micron CEO Scott DeBoer said Technology is brought to life through their patented multi-pattern lithography, combined with advanced manufacturing processes and cutting-edge material capabilities. With its proprietary multi-pattern lithography, Micron was able to bypass the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lighting technology that others have been using lately.

Mobile devices will be the first to take advantage of Micron’s new technology. 5G applications that require AI and data will no doubt make good use of the increased bandwidth, and even essential applications like the camera will benefit from reduced startup times and performance improvements in night and portrait modes.

Micron has also implemented new JEDEC Enhanced Dynamic Extension Voltage and Frequency Scaling (eDVFSC) methods. According to the company, the addition of eDVFSC provides up to 3200 megabits per second, compared to 1600 megabits per second for 1-alpha.

RAM that requires less power can make room for more powerful processors, resulting in longer battery life with current generation hardware or a combination of both.

Last month, Micron announced plans to spend up to $100 billion over the next two decades to build a world-class semiconductor manufacturing plant in upstate New York. It’s the largest private investment in New York history, and lawmakers say the recently passed CHIPS and Science Act has paved the way for Micron to build in the US rather than overseas.

Micron said it plans to grow the rest of its 1-beta portfolio over the next year, including the consumer, consumer, industrial, embedded, data center and automotive segments.
