Meta was sued by another company called Meta, which was the first to register the trademark.

What happened now? It’s not the first time Facebook’s parent company Meta has been accused of stealing its name from the company that used it years before the social media giant’s 2021 rebrand. This time around, an installation company registered as MetaX LLC, known as META or Meta .is, is the accuser and filed a trademark infringement suit to get the name back.

Facebook went all-in on its plans for the Metaverse by changing its corporate name to Meta last October. But it seems Mark Zuckerberg either didn’t know or didn’t care that the trademark was already in use.

MetaX LLC, a company whose immersive installations use technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, appeared at events including Coachella this week. announced he filed a lawsuit against Facebook/Meta.

The MetaX LLC lawsuit states that the company was founded in 2010 and filed for a trademark in 2016. This application was approved in 2020. sweat and tears in construction for over twelve years,” the company writes.

MetaX says it spent about eight months trying to negotiate with Facebook to no avail, leaving no choice but to sue. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook violated META’s federally registered trademarks and common law trademark rights, and engaged in egregious acts of unfair competition. He also claims that Facebook “crushed” his business.

The lawsuit says the numerous privacy and other scandals that have plagued Facebook for years have made it impossible for the two companies to share a name. “…consumers are likely to mistakenly believe that Meta products and services come from Facebook and that Meta is associated with toxicity that is inextricably linked to Facebook,” the statement said.

MetaX also claims that Facebook was well aware of the company’s existence prior to its name change. Founder Justin J.B. Bolognino says that in 2017 he exchanged emails with senior Facebook employees that led to “further discussions about Meta’s products and services, which led to Facebook approaching Meta to partner with Facebook on future work.”

The lawsuit alleges that Facebook’s response to Bolognino’s letter expressing concern that the same name as the social network’s could hurt his company was to point out that the two provide completely different products and services.

MetaX wants to prevent Meta from using the Meta name. He also seeks an unspecified amount of monetary damages.

Meta PCs trademark application

If the story sounds very familiar, it’s because this isn’t the first time the Meta has been in this position. Last year, we heard that an Arizona firm called Meta PCs, which sells laptops, accessories, and specialized hardware, filed for the Meta trademark in August 2021. Zuckerberg was told he could buy the name from the company for $20 million, but Meta never appears to have handed over the money.
