Lego Atari 2600 Hidden Diorama Set Goes on Sale August 1st

TLDR: The Atari 2600 kit is based on the 1980 version of the four-switch console, and includes three game cartridges – Asteroids, Adventure and Centipede, as well as a joystick that moves and feels like the original.

Back in April, there were rumors that Lego was preparing an Atari 2600-themed set that would be released this summer to celebrate Atari’s 50th anniversary. It turns out the information was mostly accurate as Lego officially announced the Atari 2600 set (#10306) today.

It does not include a “functional” TV like the Nintendo Entertainment System released a couple of years ago. Initial rumor suggested that the pack would include a playable version of Pitfall! but it didn’t materialize.

Lego Atari 2600 includes three mini-builds depicting scenes from the included games. The Adventure scene has a castle and a dragon, the Centipede build has a centipede and mushrooms, and the Asteroids shot shows a ship exploding space rocks.

You also get a separate cartridge holder and even a hidden pop-up vignette of a kid playing the game in an era-appropriate room with a BoomBox, CRT TV, roller skates and more.

The NES set, if you remember, also had a hidden diorama hidden inside the system that depicted the end of World 1-2. At this point in the game, you could either exit the scene normally or climb up and walk (or walk) over the bricks to access the three secret warp pipes.

The finished Atari 2600 console is 13 inches wide, 8.5 inches deep, and over three inches high.

The latest adult Lego set is another nostalgic game joining Back to the Future’s Mighty Bowser, Optimus Prime and the DeLorean 3-in-1 Time Machine as recent additions to a growing line of retro sets. It’s not cheap – real, working Atari VCS not much more expensive, but Lego knows that many people will pay to relive their childhood.

Lego Atari 2600 set will go on sale August 1 for $239.99.
