Is the Steam survey feeling the impact of the chip shortage?

Big picture: The latest Steam poll has dropped and the main takeaway for the month, aside from AMD’s ongoing resurgence, is clear signs of chip shortages. Only five graphics cards showed more than 0.10% gains, with the most significant gains coming from the GTX 1660, which grew by just 0.35%.

Beginning with CPU categoryAMD would be happy to see more Steam users turn to their processors, as it undermines Intel’s lead. In August, there was a surprise when Team Red fell to its lowest level in a year – 27.31% – but a month later, they came back and crossed the 30% milestone. In September, 0.69% more survey participants used AMD chips, bringing their share to a new high of 30.84%.

Checking Amazon’s best-selling processor list reveals AMD dominating the rankings again, with seven out of ten slots. Intel has two of them, including the fifth Alder Lake Core i9-12900K processor coming this week. In third place is also a controller emulator – it looks like the “Zen” part of the name is confusing Amazon.

The graphics card section looks different this month, not only because all six of the top cards have lost ground. The percentage increase chart layout shows how even the top performing product of the month, the GTX 1660, jumped just 0.35%. By comparison, the RTX 2060 grew the most in August, with 1.35%. In addition, only seven entries managed to achieve gains of 0.10% or more, and some of them are integrated or mobile GPUs.

The lack of significant movement in the graphics card section may reflect their general unavailability and price increases. A recent report showed that Ampere and RDNA 2 continue to rise in price and are harder to find, with team red’s latest price close to the highest average selling price ever.

Elsewhere, more respondents are using Linux than ever before (1.13%), and about 40% of those systems run on AMD processors. Windows 11 entered the OS rankings with a 1.82% share, while Oculus Quest 2, which removes the Facebook account requirement, has solidified its position at the top (33.19%) of VR charts.
