Intel Sound Driver Behind Windows 11 BSOD, Microsoft Publishes Workaround

In short: If you get a Blue Screen of Death in Windows 11 and you have Intel Smart Sound Technology installed, you can check its driver version. Microsoft flagged the issue this week and suggested a workaround.

This week Microsoft added Intel Smart Sound Technology driver compatibility issue in its list Known Issues in Windows 11. This error not only causes a blue screen, but it can also prevent users from upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

Microsoft reports that the affected driver is located in Device Manager> System Devices in Intel Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller (Intel SST). The file name must be IntcAudioBus.sys and the file version must be and earlier, or or earlier.

It is important to note that versions starting at 10.30 are not necessarily newer than versions starting at 10.29. It may sound a little counterintuitive, but it seems that the two versions are taken from different version histories. When viewing files, the last part of the numbers – “5152” – is the most important. Microsoft’s solution is to update these drivers to versions and You will need to check with your computer manufacturer for these drivers.

“You will need to check with your device manufacturer (OEM) if an updated driver is available and install it,” Microsoft writes.

Updating these drivers should allow users to upgrade to Windows 11, but the list states that it can take up to 48 hours before being offered an update.

Microsoft also recommends contacting your device manufacturer if an update is not yet available. He warns that users should not manually update using the Update Now button or the media creation tool until the issue is resolved.

Ironically, Microsoft brought the old blue screen of death back to Windows 11 just this week. It initially switched to BSoD black, but users apparently preferred the calming blue of the famous Windows crash screen.
