Intel Alder Lake-P Sample Beats Apple M1 Pro & M1 Max In Leaked Benchmarks

In short: Intel says it is ready to host the upcoming upcoming Alder Lake processors. Judging by the latest leaks, the company does have a lot to prove in terms of performance, even if it is likely to be at the expense of high power consumption. Performance per watt aside, Intel’s upcoming flagship mobile processor could hold up against Apple’s M1 Max and M1 Pro, which would be no small feat.

Last week, someone tested the Intel Alder Lake-P engineering sample, which gave us a first glimpse of what Team Blue has in store for people who work and play on laptops. This is the Core i9-12900H processor, which should be the multiplier locked version of Intel’s flagship 12th generation laptop processor. It is a 14-core 20-thread component that can be twice as powerful under gaming loads as an 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11980HK (Tiger Lake) processor.

Thanks guys from WccftechWe have a separate benchmark to look at, and this time around, the Core i9-12900HK is the alleged star of the show. This will be the unbridled version of the Core i9-12900H that users can take to the next level with manual overclocking. But more importantly, it seems to be a very advantageous contrast to Apple’s latest custom Arm-based chipsets – the M1 Pro and M1 Max, both of which have a 10-core processor with eight performance cores and two energy-efficient cores.

Geekbench is where Apple’s chipsets tend to stand out from the competition, but even so, Intel’s Core i9-12900HK was able to score 1,851 in the single-core test and 13,256 in the multi-point test. For reference, Apple’s latest silicon manages about 1770 points in a single-core test and 12,600 points in a multi-core test. Keep in mind that this doesn’t paint the full picture, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone if an Alder Lake part can only achieve these figures with a higher power consumption, especially since it was manufactured using a less advanced technology unit.

An even more interesting comparison can be made between Intel’s unreleased mobile processor and the previous flagship Tiger Lake, as well as its counterpart from AMD. It turns out the two processors aren’t even in the same league when it comes to multi-core benchmarking: the Core i9-11980HK scored around 9,150, while the Ryzen 5980HX scored a more modest 8,217.

The Core i9-12900HK was also able to score 14.5% more points in the single-core test compared to the flagship Tiger Lake, which is pretty much in line with the claims Intel made during Architecture Day earlier this year. It should be noted that the tests were carried out on Windows 11 so the Intel Alder Lake engineering sample may enjoy full software support for its scheduling capabilities, but the results may still improve in the coming months.

Overall, this lends some credence to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger’s claim that Intel is back with a vengeance. At least from a performance standpoint, it looks like this statement may indeed be true for Alder Lake. However, it will be interesting to see if Team Blue can keep up with Apple and even AMD, which have been rapidly innovating in the past few years.
