In short: Intel is expected to unveil non-K versions of Alder Lake (12th Gen Core) at CES on Tuesday, but Asus and Colorful have confirmed some of their specs ahead of time. Some models are a little disappointing, while others are attractive options for non-overclockers.

According to Asus, Alder Lake uses two steppings: C-0 and H-0. Both the i9 and i7 families use C-0 stepping, which has eight performance cores and eight efficiency cores. The H-0 stepping has six performance cores and no efficiency cores.

Intel shares two steppings at the junction between 12600K, which uses C-0 stepping, and 12600 (not K), which uses H-0 stepping. Because of this, the 12600K has four efficiency cores that non-K does not.
All non-K i5 and i3 processors use H-0 stepping.

Perhaps it made sense to use efficiency kernels for entry-level details. But since the H-0 stepping doesn’t have it, they are stuck with hungry performance cores.
Intel will be announcing these processors in a few days, and we’ll be testing them and drawing conclusions soon. But they seem like a worthy addition to the Alder Lake generation at the moment, and that’s all we could wish for.
