According to The 2021 Entertainment Evolution report From 2019 to 2020, the amount of time spent playing games increased significantly, according to research firm NPD Group. The average number of hours per week in the United States rose from 12.7 to 14.8.

This increase is understandable, given that most of the population has been confined to their homes due to the pandemic. Interestingly, however, the latter figure did not remain an anomaly; in 2021 it will increase even more to 16.5 hours per week.

One of the demographics noted for the aforementioned growth is not the coveted 18-34 market, but rather a more mature audience – American gamers aged 45-64 spend hours.

“In 2019, 65% of consumers in this age group played games for about 9 hours a week. That figure has grown significantly in 2020, with 69% playing about 12 hours a week and 75% playing about 16 hours a week this year, “NPD disclosed.

It’s not just the entertainment aspect that attracts senior gamers. NPD emphasized that gaming allows them to stay connected with family and friends.

“And these players continue to play more than other age groups,” said Mat Piscatella, an analyst at the research firm. “Despite the overall decline in the market share of people playing games, the time that gamers aged 45-64 spend playing games has continued to grow. Obviously, games are not a segment for children and adolescents; this is a segment that attracts players of all ages. “

Regarding the recession that Piscatella alluded to, NPD reported that the total number of Americans playing video games in 2021 fell to 76 percent from 79 percent in 2020. However, this is still above 73 percent in 2019.

Meanwhile, the amount of money spent on video games in the U.S. has increased 35 percent in the six months ended July 2021. Another study in 2020 found adults spent 110 hours playing during two and a half months of isolation at the height of the pandemic.
