In 2021, consumers spent 3.8 trillion hours on mobile apps.

In a nutshell: Consumers are spending more time and money than ever on mobile apps. According to the latest App Annie Mobile Health Report, the average daily time spent on mobile averaged 4.8 hours per user. This is 30 percent more than in two years and represents a third of the daily waking hours in the 10 markets analyzed. Collectively, this equates to about 3.8 trillion hours.

Of course, 4.8 hours is average. For example, in Brazil and Indonesia, consumers are approaching 5.5 hours of use. South Korea is right at the five o’clock mark, with Mexico, India and Japan lagging behind.

Mobile app spending is even more mind-boggling. Consumers collectively spent $ 170 billion in app store purchases last year. That equates to over $ 320,000 spent every minute in 2021. Annie’s app also found that 233 apps brought in over $ 100 million each last year.

By comparison, in 2021, only 38 films grossed over $ 100 million at the box office.

Sensor Tower in its year-end report last month estimated that consumer spending in app stores will reach $ 133 billion in 2021, up 19.7% from a year ago.

New app downloads reached 230 billion, up 5% from last year. On the other hand, over 435,000 applications are downloaded per minute.

Unsurprisingly, advertisers are paying attention to this. In 2021, advertising spending reached $ 295 billion. If it were a country, it would rank 41st among the largest economies in the world.
