Voicemail was so important that families would buy a whole device just to save them. Nowadays, we rarely think about it – most people won’t leave a voice message even if the person calling doesn’t answer.

However, having a custom voicemail account installed on your iPhone is still important. Not only can personalized voice messaging make you look more professional if an employer calls you, but it also gives you the ability to tell anyone calling a better way to reach you.

Fortunately, installing a custom voicemail greeting on your iPhone is incredibly simple. Here’s how to do it.

How to set up voice on your iPhone

1. Open the Phone app – the app you use to make calls and track your contacts – and tap “Voicemail” in the bottom right corner.

2. Once there, tap on “Hello” in the upper left corner. Your iPhone will take a while to pick up and load the greeting from your current voicemail box, which you can play with the controls in the middle of the page.

You can see all your saved voice messages in this menu, and also set a new greeting.

3. If you do not have a voice message already installed, “Default” will be checked. To set up your greeting, check “Custom”.

4. When you’re ready to start recording, tap on “Register” and start talking. Once you start registering, you will see that the line turns red. This indicates how much time you have left.

Need inspiration for your message? Here’s a basic greeting that will work in most situations:

  • “Hello, you have arrived [Name]. I can’t answer the phone now. Please leave a message, and I will get back to you as soon as possible. “

If you’re not always near your phone, or keep quiet most of the time, you may also want to tell callers a better way to get there.

5. When you have finished registering, click “Stop”.

6. To listen to your recording, tap “Play” on the left hand side of the screen.

7. Once you’re happy with your registration, tap “Save” in the upper right corner.

If you also want to verify that it worked, try calling your number using someone else’s phone.
