YouTube Premium
and other content that you have purchased or rented.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch YouTube content, including YouTube Premium and

, on your Roku.

What you can do with YouTube on Roku

The Roku YouTube app gives you access to all YouTube features, such as playlists and purchased content. For starters, install the free YouTube app from the Roku channel store. Once installed, you can sign in with your Google account to access a variety of content.

You can search for videos using the lens icon in the left sidebar. To watch a video, just highlight and press OK on your Roku remote. It will start playing right away – even usually after a few announcements.

Roku’s YouTube app also has a number of other familiar features.

After logging in to your YouTube account, you will be able to access your playlists. You can also add videos to your playlists while browsing YouTube. Playlists are available from the left sidebar menu.

Access to the guest account

The YouTube app for Roku has a handy guest account that can be used to store free content without accessing a Google Account. You won’t need any additional installation to jump into your favorite videos after installing the Roku YouTube app.

YouTube Premium

YouTube Premium, formerly called YouTube Red, is a paid subscription that includes free commercial viewing, unlimited music streaming and access to original YouTube shows. To access YouTube Premium content from the Roku YouTube app, be sure to sign in with the YouTube account you subscribed to. Use the search option to find the content you want to view, or visit your following Premium channels.

The app also supports multiple users so you can easily change users as needed.

YouTube TV

YouTube TV subscribers can access live TV streaming with over 85 channels and unlimited DVR storage.

Unfortunately for Roku users, Google (which owns YouTube) and Roku have severed ties when it comes to live TV streaming – the YouTube TV app has been removed from

in the Roku Canal
Store and can no longer be downloaded.

But there are solutions. If you have the latest version of the YouTube app, you should find an “Go to YouTube TV” option at the bottom of the left sidebar. Click here and sign in to your YouTube TV account to be brought here.

Also, if you already have the YouTube TV app downloaded on your Roku, it still works. Do not delete the application, because if you do, there will be no recovery.

Rentals and purchases

The Roku YouTube app lets you buy movies and TV series from directly in the app. You can too access the content you purchased earlier via YouTube or Google Play Movies and TV – these purchases will be featured in the Shopping section of the app.
