What happened now? Henry Cavill has stated that he will not return as Superman. The news comes just a few months after DC Studios revealed he would be reprising his Man of Steel role (and after a Black Adam cameo). New studio co-chairman James Gunn tweeted that a new Superman story is in development that focuses on the character’s earlier life, so Cavill will not be playing the role.
Just seven weeks ago, Cavill revealed that he was “back” as Superman after his brief appearance in Black Adam. Shortly thereafter, the British actor announced that he would be leaving Netflix’s The Witcher after its third season next summer, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia. Cavill never gave a reason for his departure, although it was speculated that filming Superman would have led to scheduling conflicts for the series.
But it looks like Cavill may have said goodbye to the White Wolf a little prematurely. “This is sad news for everyone. After all, I won’t be back as Superman. After the studio told me to announce my return back in October, before they were hired, this news is not the easiest, but that’s life,” Cavill wrote on his Instagram. “I respect that James and Peter need to build the universe. I wish them and everyone involved with the new universe good luck and happiness.”
Gunn confirmed the news on Twitter. Guardians of the Galaxy director said he and co-chairman Peter Safran have a list of DC projects ready, including a Superman movie that he confirmed is not a different origin story – reports say it will focus on his young years as a reporter for the Daily Planet in Metropolis. Gunn is writing, but no director has yet been found.
But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we’ve discussed some exciting opportunities to work together in the future.

Just six days before Gunn and Safran began their roles at DC Studios on November 1, Cavill said in an interview that he was “very excited” that Gunn had been hired.
Rumor has it that Gunn doesn’t like Cavill. When asked if he would consider these claims, he tweeted: “Of course: lies.” Youtuber and podcaster Joshua Luca, who hosts The Den of Nerds, responded: “More people contacted me after you said that to tell me that you really don’t like him. I’m just saying what I heard.” This elicited a less than friendly reaction from Gunn.
“So weird. You look so turned on! Anyway, I just had forty people contact me to say that you just got kicked out of your mom’s basement. I’m sorry dude.”
The news came shortly after Patty Jenkins spoke out about the cancellation of the third Wonder Woman movie. The director said she never left the project and that Wonder Woman 3 might not move forward under the new DC Studio bosses.
